Open sourcing the AI ecosystem ft. Arthur Mensch of Mistral AI and Matt Miller
Arthur is the founder and CEO of Mistral AI. Despite just being nine months old as a company and having many fewer resources than some of the large foundation model companies so far, I think they've really shocked everybody by putting out incredibly high quality models approaching GPT four and calibre out into the open. We were thrilled to have Arthur with us today, all the way from France, to share more about the opportunity behind building an open source. My partner, Matt Miller, helps lead our efforts in Europe. Interviewing Arthur today, he brought with him the efficiency of a French train.
Matt invited Arthur to begin with the background story of why he chose to start Mistral. Starting from the concepts that sparked Mistral amidst a flourishing career at DeepMind and research contributions like the Chinchilla paper. Arthur elaborates on the open AI exchanges that were present in the field and how they dissipated by 2022, which inspired the creation of Mistral. Observing the ChatGPT launch fueled their pursuit of an open-source venture, leveraging the skilled talent present in France. Mistral was born to make open-source strides with their lean, efficient team.
The company recently released Mistral Large, establishing partnerships with Microsoft and Snowflake, among others. The challenge remains balancing open-source initiatives with commercial ventures, which many companies grapple with. Mistral aims high, continually setting the standard for open-source projects and fueling commercial adoption. Cooperating across different software providers, and the dynamics of playing a fast-paced game where AI evolves swiftly, encapsulate their strategic maneuvering.
The desire to push open-source models and create a developer-friendly AI ecosystem at Mistral was core to their formation. The company's focus on delivering a platform for global universal access, allowing Mistral to grow its community and optimize utility in open-source contributions. Upcoming multilingual and multimodal models showcase their ambitions to cover distinct vertical markets and geographical demands.
Arthur also detailed the economic opportunities for Mistral in both large and small adaptive models. While acknowledging the individuals that leverage these models for variable applications. He emphasizes the balance in utilizing both large (orchestrator) and small models to meet specific applications' intelligence and latency requirements.
Mistral stands out by investing in the community, seeking collaborations to better their models through evaluations and community feedback. The company continues to stay ahead with their open-source and predictive model offerings, focusing on product and business explorations to discover new opportunities.
Arthur painted a vivid picture of the advantages of operating from Europe, including a talented engineer pool, support from the state, and linguistic strengths aiding them over competitors. Their strategy capitalizes on cost-effectivity without sacrificing quality, ensuring competitive advancements even while operating beyond Silicon Valley's immediate ecosystem.
Future prospects involve seeing Mistral as a key player in developing open AI platforms, advancing towards creating autonomous agents and evolving from developer-centric tools towards more user-oriented offerings. They foresee that AI's openness will foster a landscape where any user could create personalized assistant and agent models, fundamentally transforming interactions with AI.
Arthur stresses the importance of ambition and the willingness to embrace evolving challenges, summarizing the founder's journey as continuously building from scratch. He encourages dreamers in the AI field to pursue big aspirations while keeping pace with rapid advancements, highlighting the exciting, albeit exhausting, nature of innovating in AI.
